Juneteenth Celebration

If you are like me and enjoys celebrating the achievements and dreams of your family and friends then you would understand us (hubby and I) saying yes to a friends request to attend an event in which he was performing.

We did not have any idea what we were walking into, but knew that it was outside, it is not raining and it was Father’s Day Weekend and what my hubby wants he gets, so we went.

Off to Marietta Square and low and behold there is a crowd of people celebrating, “Juneteenth”. I had no idea what it was, but we found our friends/family and sat with them. I am a looker and like to know what is going on, so I looked around and saw on the stage that it was an event sponsored by the the NAACP.

According to wikipedia dot org:
Though the Emancipation Proclamation had been issued on September 22, 1862, with an effective date of January 1, 1863, it had minimal immediate effect on most slaves’ day-to-day lives, particularly in Texas, which was almost entirely under Confederate control. Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, the day Union General Gordon Granger and 2,000 federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to take possession of the state and enforce the emancipation of its slaves. I thought that was interesting, but back to the event.

There were some tables set-up for some of the artists  (promotional) including a table for NAACP membership. There was an online gospel radio station that I have never heard of which is:  108praiseradio dot com, but I will start listening to them in addition to the other radio stations I listen to in the area. I am hating that I did not ask for one of those lovely white or black shirts they had hidden:)  I saw ya.

There were about 10 acts and all were wonderful, they included a female comedian (hilarious), some quartet groups, single artists, and of course our friend and his band.

Please see below some of the pics that I was able to take:

This apparently was the 2nd annual event and if I remember, I probably will attend again. It was free to the public and it is an all weekend event. If you enjoy people watching, enjoy good music and just plain being outside this is an event you will want to be at the Juneteeth Celebration every year.

We need love for each other and not hate.

God Bless!!
