Watching from the side, I saw her mouth move to form, “Oh my goodness, I am so sorry for saying that Mommy”. My friend had said something very nasty to her mom and her mom forgave her, but had she forgiven herself?  Years later she still manages to tell me the story and began to ask her about how she is feeling about it, because it seemed to me that she was holding on to guilt and shame. This incident lingering on for years like that is truly a sign of it, but sometimes we just overlook it as being normal.

Heather Davis Nelson, the wonderful author of Un-ASHAMED: Healing our brokenness and finding freedom from shame took the time to delve into this somewhat hard topic to discuss and actually deal with. She opens with mentioning about public speaking and the fear of being publicly humiliated/embarrassed. I can so relate to that challenge and honestly it holds me back to this day. What is at it’s core? That is one of the things that is addressed in this book. Shame being unchecked and not addressed can become a barrier between you and others.

Shame keeps us from being honest about our struggles, sins and less-than-perfect moments. Fear of shame drives us to perfectionism in all areas of our lives, so that there would be no imperfection to be noticed or judged (Pg 20).

What is the remedy? The way that we can end shame for good is through relationship with Jesus Christ (Savior) and once we are in relationship our shame will begin to dissipate. How do we become free from shame? Faith and specifically that faith that Christ handled it and finished shame and brought it to it’s knees. This is the Great Shame Exchange and Heather goes through how to begin the exchange.

What you will find is time for reflection and discussion at the end of each chapter and some of the chapters are:

Clothed in Christ: Body Shame which includes the if only scenarios we all play in our heads, ie. if only my hair was straighter which is indirectly saying our outsides are what are making us happy/unhappy and if I improve my outside everything will be better.

or

Free in Christ: Performance Shame which tends to say if I am successful at this or that then I will be accepted/loved, etc.

At the end, we find A Shame-Free Destiny which is what Christ paid the price for (our ultimate freedom) and shame is not freedom.
