Frozen Strawberry Mint Julep | Kentucky Derby with Four Roses Bourbon

Four-Roses-Bourbon

Four Roses Bourbon asked me to use my creative juices to come up with a drink in time for the Kentucky Derby. The Kentucky Derby has been one of those events that I have always wanted to attend.

I was privileged to be born in Kentucky, but not raised there. My mom decided to have me near my grandmother (her mom), that lived in West Virginia and the nearest hospital was where, in Kentucky. So when her water broke and I decided to make my debut into the world, it was in the Spring month of May which is when the Kentucky Derby is held.

My mommy and I stayed there for a couple of months and then my dadda (pronounced da da), came to get us. As I grew up, I always liked hearing things about Kentucky and the most popular was the Kentucky Derby. All of the pictures that I have seen involved women wearing big hats and beautiful dresses. I can see myself wearing a big hat that covers half my face covering my eyes, some beautiful frilly dress and some very expensive sunglasses to help make my outfit.

Don’t forget the drink. All of the press pictures that I have seen involve guests mingling with drinks in their hands. The signature drink, the mint julep and in honor of that drink and the Kentucky Derby, I have decided to make a frozen drink to handle on those hot days in Kentucky as well as here in Georgia.

Frozen Strawberry Mint Julep

12 oz package of frozen strawberries

1 1/4 cup of Four Roses Bourbon

10 torn pieces of mint leaves

2 tablespoons of sugar

1 tablespoon lemon juice

1 strawberry and 1 mint sprig for decoration

Combine all of the ingredients in a blender and in my instance a Blendtec machine on high until the consistency was how I wanted it.

Fill 4 4oz glasses with the mixture and then garnish with a strawberry and a mint sprig.

Enjoy….

Here’s to one day attending the Kentucky Derby and sharing this Frozen Strawberry Mint Julep recipe with them there:)  Cheers.
